Western Samoa Accommodation These are concentrated in the main town of Apia on the north coast of Upolu. There are just five small beach resorts outside of Apia, the largest having 22 bungalows, but over 20 beach fales run by local Samoan families on village land which offer some fantastic locations in traditional thatch huts - there are even several lovely over-water fales. Beach fales are basic wooden structures, most with coconut frond walls that can be raised like a curtain to let the breeze through, the more traditional ones having thatch roofs and several offering enclosed walls for more privacy. Costing from about US$30 per night including meals, these are the choice for backpackers and discerning travellers and are becoming popular with more mature clientele prepared to "rough it" a bit to experience the true Samoan way. American Samoa Accommodations There are only a dozen or so places to stay on the main island of Tutuila, with just two large hotels catering to businessmen, a few smaller business style motels and a handful of bed and breakfast style lodges, mostly between the airport and Pago Pago town.
