The Police Band march along the main street every morning at 8am and stop all traffic flow through Apia. Fortunately there's not much traffic. Colourful buses at the Apia Bus Stand. Local bus rides can be fun albeit cramped and uncomfortable but unfortunately few buses journey to the south coast of Upolu and those that do are unreliable. The clock tower represents the heart of downtown Apia. Maketi Fou, the main Apia market, is a busy and colourful place most mornings and especially on Saturday. The fish market is the place to see fish of all sizes and colours. Beach Road, the main street along the harbour front is location of The Travellers' Lounge tourist information centre and internet cafe which is ideal for booking all your island tours and accommodation. The old and new Parliaments on historical Mulinuu Peninsula. The harbour wall along Mulinuu Peninsula has great views of downtown and is a great place for walking and meeting the locals. Traditional outrigger canoe racing is a popular sport and can be witnessed most evenings from the gorgeous setting of Apia Harbour. The surrounding hills offer stunning views of the coast and atop Vaiala is the grave of author Robert Louis Stevenson who lived here for the last years of his life. Vailima House, resident of Robert Louis Stevenson is now a museum honouring his life and literature. Vaiala beach, a small coastal suburb 10-minutes walk from downtown. It's possible to swim in the ocean although the beach itself is rather small and untidy. |
